One thing this pandemic has started are skincare trends. Whether you are 20 or 50 years old, maintaining and taking care of your skin is essential to prevent signs of aging.
But what exactly do anti-aging products do for the skin? Well, the products are aimed to decrease wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots and elasticity. Anti-aging products work to increase the skin's hydration and firmness.
It is important to understand that although these products may help your skin, a healthy diet, water and sunscreen are key to younger looking skin!
Now you might be wondering, what products do help create younger looking skin? We've researched and created a list of steps and products that will help you achieve that goal. Please note that the products mentioned are ideal for all skin types.
Cleansing the skin is a step everyone should be doing, even if you don't leave your house. By using a cleanser, you are removing dirt, skin oils, bacteria and pollutants that may cause inflammation. Inflammation can lead to dark spots and acne.
Here are two cleansers we recommend for two different budgets.
This wash contains ingredients such as polyhydroxy acids (PHA's) which remove dead skin cells and improve the texture of your skin, while reducing the appearance of large pores, fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. PHA's include benefits such as antioxidants, hydration, texture and anti-aging. This cleanser also includes ingredients such as aloe, chamomile, cucumber and rosemary extract. This wash is soap-free and fragrance-free, which is great if your skin is sensitive.
The Cetaphil Dermacontrol Oil Control Foam Wash is one of the most hyped skin care products right now, and I completely understand the hype. Back in 2016, I purchased several products from Cetaphil to try out on my sensitive skin, and they all passed the test. This cleanser is non-irritating and unlike most cleansers, it doesn't dry out your skin. It cleans out any dirt or oil from your skin, while maintaining your natural pH level. Often times, a harsh cleanser or scrub will strip your pH level. I have always found cheaper cleansers from the drug store to be more effective.
How to Use This Cleanser:
Step number two, toning, is a step that not everyone may follow. Essentially, toner works to get rid of impurities and any leftover oil that your face wash was unable to remove. A toner also removes chlorine and impurities from the water that was used on your face. However, if you have sensitive skin, it is important to find the right toner to avoid irritation and potential dryness. A toner provides amazing benefits for your skin if your target is to reduce aging skin. The right toner for your skin will shrink and close your pores.
My best advice is to avoid alcohol based toners. Alcohol based toners will irritate all skin types and provide more cons than pros. Ingredients that are good for the skin include aloe vera, rose water, almond oil and glycerin. My all time favourite facial toner is the Nivea Gentle Toner for Sensitive Skin. It's cheap, lasts a while and works great to close those pores.
So what is the end result of using a toner? Plump and glowy skin. If used right, the toner will help hydrate and remove any impurities left on your face after cleansing.
Now serums are highly effective if they are applied correctly. Why are serums important to include in your daily skin care routine? Unlike cleansers and moisturizers, serums absorb into the skin to offer additional benefits such as antioxidants, peptides and restoring ingredients. Essentially serums contain high amounts of active ingredients.
So what is the difference between serums and lotions/facial creams? Serums are made of small molecules that can penetrate deep within your skin. Serums work to target areas of concerns such as aging. On the other hand, moisturizers are aimed to hydrate your skin. Although they are essential to your skin care routine, they tend to be heavier and create a barrier to absorb the ingredients.
It is important to note that including serums in your routine doesn't mean you should eliminate moisturizers.
Here are two great serums, with once again two different price points.
The Shiseido Power Infusing Concentrate is a serum infused with antioxidants such as reishi mushroom and iris root extracts to help boost your skin.
As stated earlier, serums are meant to target concerns such as anti-aging. That's why I really want to break down the key ingredients for this serum.
->Reishi Mushroom: contains sugars (polysacchardies) which hydrate your skin, while reducing signs of aging. This extract reduces the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and inflammation.
-> Iris Root: renews your epidermis (outermost layer) and transforms your skin to feeling and looking tighter and younger.
->Bulgarian Rose Water: acts as a healing agent. It reduces redness, acne and hyperpigmentation.
-> Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract: reduces wrinkles and fine lines, while cleaning your pores and hyperpigmentation.
Key Features:->Paraben Free
The Vichy Liftactiv Serum is one of the best selling serum's for younger looking skin. The serum's goal is to repair the damage your skin has taken over the years by regenerating it. It works to correct wrinkles, fine lines, firmness, and the complexion of your skin.
Here are some key ingredients that work to reduce the signs of aging.
->Rhamnose: a plant sugar that comes from the silver birch tree, which is known to fight signs of aging and promote regeneration.
-> Fragmented Hyaluronic Acid: a form of hyaluronic acid that is smaller in size, which makes it easier to penetrate deep within your skin. The fragmented hyaluronic acid will provide hydration and reduce the appearance of pores.
->For All Skin Types
->Tested Under Dermatological Control
No matter the concern for your skin, moisturizing your skin is important to keep your skin and cells healthy. Moisturizing your skin will prevent flaking, dullness and dryness. In order for our skin to repair from the environmental damage, it needs to be gently massaged and moisturized.
I also wanted to point out two myths about moisturizers that I wanted to address:
1) Heavier Creams hydrate better: FALSE. The thickness of the cream is insignificant. What you should be worried about is the key ingredients in the moisturizer. Heavier creams can clog pores.
2) Oily Skin Types Should Not Moisturize: FALSE. If you don't moisturize your skin, your skin will actually produce more oil to make up for the dehydration it is dealing with... this just makes things worse for oily skin.
Now here are two moisturizers I recommend for all skin types... with obviously two budgets.
The Shiseido Uplifting and Firming Day Cream helps to reduce the signs of aging by sculpting the skin and renewing fullness. Although it is not a serum, this day cream works to get rid of dark spots and wrinkles. My favourite thing about this day cream is that it is silky and so creamy! It applies very smoothly and leaves your skin feeling plump.
One ingredient I want to point out is VP8. VP8 contains 5 antioxidant ingredients which include olive root, tea and angelica root extracts. These powerful ingredients provide a great amount of protection for your skin.
Simple is just as the brand implies, simple! I've not only used this moisturizing cream but also their makeup removing cleanser and they both work amazing. This moisturizer will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth all day long...seriously, 24 hours!
Now here are some key ingredients that make this affordable cream worth the hype:
1) Vitamins B5 & E: pro-Vitamin B5 helps give your skin a soft and smooth texture, while vitamin E prevents aging and reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
2) Shea Butter: contains fatty acids and vitamins that promote anti-inflammatory properties.
-> No Parabens
-> Dermatologist Tested
-> Infused with multivitamins
I hate to say it, but we tend to develop wrinkles and fine lines under our eyes first. All the stress and lack of sleep can cause bags, puffiness and wrinkles.
But what makes a moisturizer and an eye cream different? Why can't we just use our moisturizer or serum under the eyes? Well, eye creams contain ingredients meant to target issues such as dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles. Moisturizers also contain ingredients that might be harmful and irritating for your eyes.
The No7 Early Defense Eye Cream does exactly as it states... protects your eyes, early! This eye cream works to reduce shadows, dark spots, wrinkles and puffiness. It contains lipopeptides and vitamin A, which work together to get rid of the fine lines.
Now SPF might be one of the most important steps to reduce the signs of aging. So let me keep this simple and quick, here are some of the reasons why sunscreen is essential for anti-aging.
-> Anti-Dark Spot
-> High in antioxidants
-> Skin-restoring and Renewing
-> UVA & UVB Protection
Keep in mind, that the sunscreen you purchase should be SPF 30 or greater. Always apply sunscreen last! If applied earlier, it will not be effective.
My favourite sunscreen to apply is a two in one product, the Elizabeth Arden Anti-aging Moisture Cream SPF 30. The best part about this cream is not only does it contain SPF 30, but it is infused with antioxidants. One ingredient I want to highlight in this lotion is Idebenone. Idebenone is one of the most powerful antioxidants. It works to protect the skin's cells from free radicals. As our skin ages, it creates wrinkles, fine lines and cells die. Well, idebenone works to speed up the energy production and promote longer life for cells. The longer the cells stays alive, the greater the chances for our skin to grow new layers of cells to prevent aging.
Well, I hope this blog post was helpful for your skin care journey. Stay tuned for some more tips and tricks and product reviews!
